Reminiscent of a votive candle stand, Bob Bicknell-Knight’s Deposit (2026) is part of an ongoing series titled Altars. The works revolve around hybrid paintings of clocks, documented within different video games, embedded within 3D printed structures that are covered in multiple layers of concrete. The works revolve around ideas of time, extractivism, video game worlds and control.

The hybrid paintings begin as photographs before being edited and printed onto canvas, stretched and painted onto with acrylic paint, with the offline hand interacting with the original digital image. The works are effectively clocks frozen in time, mimicking how time in video games is fabricated and stretched, rarely corresponding to time within the physical world.

Votive stands are traditionally found in churches where candles are lit as acts of prayer and remembrance, functioning as an interface between the individual and a system of belief. Members of the public are encouraged to engage with Deposit in a similar way, lighting a candle whilst taking time to reflect on our 24/7,hyper-connected lives and our collective overreliance on the exploitation of natural resources.

Deposit has been included in the following exhibitions:

– The School of Strange Weather. At The House of Leaking Sky, Estonian National Pavilion at Venice Biennale, Venice, IT, 11th – 16th August 2026.
