The Dig (Standing), 2023
PLA plastic, rust effect paint, wax, steel
73 x 40 x 97 cm
The Dig (Standing) (2023) was originally part of a large-scale installation, part of Bob Bicknell-Knight’s solo exhibition Digging History at INDUSTRA in Brno, Czech Republic in 2021, that adopted the display conventions of the archeological-site turned museum, made up of several 3D printed sculptures and found objects, displayed within a fabricated archaeological dig complete with debris and overhead lighting.
The installation was part of the solo exhibition which presented a speculative future troubled by the remains of a rogue society of Spots; autonomous robot dogs currently being produced by Boston Dynamics. Drawing inspiration from Boston Dynamic’s frequent promotional mistreatments of their creations, the exhibition called into question whether new machine technologies will result in social stratification.
The 2023 version is a reproduction of the original work created in 2021, created for a private collector based in Brussels. The work was sealed with a wax finish and the original 3D model was rebuilt from scratch.
